Eskdale: home to the Beckside Boggle
THE BECKSIDE boggle is of a horribly disfigured man wearing a shawl. The legend is detailed in a book by Alice Rea and concerns a man, disguised as a woman, who tricks his way into a cottage. But the homeowner, Ann Southward, sees through his disguise and, while he sleeps, pours boiling hot fat down this throat! His corpse is secretly buried by Ann and her husband but the spirit of the man still walks.
