Whitehaven: home to a couple of boggles
WHITEHAVEN has at least two boggles. The New Town boggle is described as "a spectre in the shape of a huge dog". It was said to appear in the streets when a fatal shipwreck or colliery accident was about to occur, It would announce the approaching fatality by howling fearfully at the dwellings of those whose relatives were to suffer. The other boggle is said to be of a tall figure wandering the streets and one tale is of a woman who lived in the Market Place who died in mysterious circumstances
There are many ghosts in Cumbria - but only a handful have the term 'boggle' associated with them. Others are termed dobbies or bargheists. Check out our Google Map of Cumbrian boggles.
