One of the fairy houses at Fairy Row, near Gelt Wood, Cumbria
SOMETHING of a stir is caused each summer in Gelt Woods, near Brampton, Cumbria. A number of ‘fairy houses appear. The six-inch high houses first mysteriously appeared in 2010. No-one knows who put them there; some suggested an artist with a sense of humour but we prefer to believe the fairies themselves built them. Some of the houses were numbered and some of them had names on the door. For instance there was an Ivy Cottage and a Mossy Hows. There was even a sign on one of the doors asking the postman not to deliver junk mail! At one house there was a door key on a chain and a tiny wheelbarrow was left outside one of the homes suggesting that tending the garden was an important part of the fairies’ lifestyle.
The fairies and their houses vanish around September but usually return in early summer (May or June). Email me if you would like a more precise location to visit the site.
