Christmas morning, Winchester, 2003 Dr Brian Rees and his family are 'woken' by the singing of carols from the choristers of Pilgirms School
Christmas morning in Winchester is rather special. While for most people it is a day of celebration and rest for the choristers of Pilgrims' School it can be a day of hard work. They provide choir boys for neighbouring Winchester Cathedral and Christmas Day is particularly busy. But their Christmas morning starts with an unusual tradition: It is the job of the boys to go and wake up their headmaster!
Dr Brian Rees and his family probably have no difficulty waking up on Christmas morning but the tradition demands that the boys turn up outside his house (Cheyney Court) and sing carols under his window. Then their real work for the day can begin in earnest.
